By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.  And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.  CCC1499

Refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) paragraphs 1499-1532 for more detailed information on this sacrament.

Anointing of the sick prepares the believer for the here and now and the hereafter.  It is an important sacrament that may be done several times or maybe only once in a believer’s life.  It often draws Christians closer to their faith because the act brings to mind that they could die and could be the very last Christian act they undergo.

Although we usually think of this sacrament as something only the elderly undergo, it is an act that anyone, old or young, may need at some point in their life.

A usual use for the sacrament of Anointing is to bless and bring healing to persons before any major surgery or medical procedure takes place.  It is also used for the dying to ease their souls.  But this sacrament can also be used for persons troubled in spirit.  Sometimes spiritual brokenness is greater than any physical illness and people need healing for that as well.

The sacrament is a simple ritual of a brief penitential rite, where the person being anointed acknowledges their sins and is prayed for.  A verse of scripture about the miracles of Jesus is also read.  But the critical part of this sacrament is the laying on of hands healing and the anointing of the sick.
